The ICCT seeks a highly motivated and committed full-time Marine Associate Researcher in our Beijing office to analyze and recommend policies to avoid, reduce, and eliminate greenhouse gases, air pollution, and water pollution from ships and ports. Initial projects will focus on analyses to support strengthening China’s domestic policies to reduce pollution from ships. Additional work will relate to advancing zero-emission vessel shipbuilding in China, Republic of Korea, and Japan.


You Will:

  • Modeling greenhouse gas and air pollution emissions from ships and ports.
  • Estimating the emissions reduction potentials of policy alternatives.
  • Synthesizing technical information into policy-relevant documents and presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences, with a focus on China and the Pacific Rim region.
  • Engaging with external stakeholders including government officials, International Maritime Organization delegates, non-governmental organizations, academics, and industry.
  • Other duties as assigned.

You Have:

  • A Bachelor's degree (Master’s degree preferred) in engineering, transportation, environment, or related field.
  • Excellent quantitative, analytical, and research skills combined with strategic problem-solving, critical thinking, and organizational skills are required.
  • Significant modeling experience (e.g. emissions, air quality, fate and transport, energy use, health impacts of air pollution, etc.) along with the ability to manage and analyze large datasets, especially in Python and R.
  • Superior written and verbal communications skills in English and Chinese, plus excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Superior proficiency with MS Excel, MS Word, and PowerPoint.
  • An understanding of maritime transportation systems and policy is preferred.
  • Experience working with policymakers, NGOs, industry, and other stakeholders is advantageous.

Our Benefits


This full-time position will be based in ICCT's Beijing office. The salary will be ¥263,200. We offer an excellent benefits package, including health insurance, substantial paid vacation, retirement contribution with generous 7% employer contribution, transportation subsidies, and other benefits.
