Pharmacist â€" In Charge

Reports To: Practice Medical Director

Supervises: Pharmacy Staff, as Assigned

Status: Salaried, Exempt, Professional

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the operation/management of pharmacy services in their r! espective clinic. Supplies, prepares and dispenses medications, and advises on their appropriate use. The Pharmacist â€" In Charge is distinguished from the Pharmacist by the PIC’s responsibility for ensuring compliance with all laws and regulations governing the operation of their respective pharmacy. The PIC is also distinguished from the Pharmacist in that the former is responsible for planning and directing the work of the clinic pharmacy, and has full supervisory responsibility for all pharmacy staff within the clinic pharmacy. The PIC will ensure that sufficient technician staffing is present and adequate technician training has been provided.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Prepares or supervises the dispensing of medicines, ointments and tablets.

Advises patients on how their medicines are to be taken or used in the safest and most effective way in the treatment of common ailments.

Advises members of the public and other health professi! onals about medicines (both prescription and over-the-counter ! medicines), including appropriate selection, dosage and drug interactions, potential side effects and therapeutic effects.

Selects, gives advice on and supplies non-prescription medicine, sickroom supplies and other products.

Maintains inventory control over medications, supplies and OTC products

Complies with standards set forth by PCHC and other regulatory bodies.

May assist with billing duties, including entering charges and diagnoses and following up with providers on incomplete information.

Serves as a liaison to other healthcare practitioners in providing quality clinical pharmacy services in the respective ambulatory clinic setting.

Provides thorough drug information in a timely manner.

Provides education to patients and/or family regarding medications, devices and/or disease states, when warranted.

Performs timely and appropriate clinical interventions to ensure the optimal delivery of quality m! edication management.

Documents clinical notes completely and accurately in patient medical records in compliance with HCHD policies and departmental standards.

Documents interventions and tracks outcomes in a timely manner.

Participates and/or assists the Clinical Coordinator or designee in the peer review process.

Participates, assists and/or organizes special activities supportive of the development of clinical pharmacy services.

Complies with the collaborative practice agreement requirements.

Works with Care Management Team to provide Medication Management for patients.

Ensures compliance with all laws and regulations governing the operation of their respective pharmacy.

Supervises all pharmacy staff within the clinic pharmacy.

Manages a team of operations staff, including recruitment and training activities for internal and external pharmacist and technician staff, ensures operational effi! ciency and strong customer service, drives performance review and goal ! setting process.

Monitors and coaches staff on performance related issues and works to resolve performance gaps.

Delegates work/tasks to staff to ensure departmental and client driven needs are met and to streamline workflow.

Assists in training activities for all new pharmacy staff.

Works with the management team in the daily operations of the specialty, including the planning and implementation of new pharmacy programs.

Assists in reviewing, updating, and creating new processes for the pharmacy and works with the management team to improve efficiency throughout all of the pharmacy.

Serves as a clinical resource to Care Management Team.

Ensures quality processes are followed, quality audits are performed, and corrections are made for deficiencies, according to policy.

Conducts safety meetings with direct reports at least once per month. Safety topics can range from discussing safety issues within the D! epartment, safety communication from Administration, or any other pertinent topic. Safety meetings may be stand alone or as part of another regularly scheduled group meeting. Documentation of meeting agenda and attendance sheets must be kept and provided to Human Resources upon request.

Performs safety inspections of assigned work area (i.e. office building, grounds and office areas) at least once per month. Inspection forms must be kept on file and provided to Human Resources upon request.

Reports all accidents, regardless of severity, to Human Resources within 24 hours. These will be reported on the Employee Incident/Injury Report and Investigation form. Human Resources will monitor the timeliness of reporting.

Investigates and analyzes all accidents, regardless of severity, for root cause. Once the Employee Incident/Injury Report and Investigation form is processed by Human Resources, it will be returned to the supervisor to complete the Correc! tive Action section at the end of this form, which will need to be comp! leted and returned to Human Resources within 7 days.

Conducts safety training with all new direct reports to orient them to the office and their workstation. This safety training will include the location of the Safety Manual, MSDS Manual and eye wash station if applicable.

Provides training to all new direct reports on the safe use of their computer and the proper adjustment of their workstations within five (5) days of hire date and annually thereafter.

Interacts harmoniously and effectively with others, focusing upon the attainment of organizational goals and objectives through a commitment to teamwork.

Conforms to acceptable attendance and punctuality standards as expressed in the Employee Handbook.

Follows safety rules and protocols as established by the Environment of Care Committee. Immediately reports any workplace injury or incident to Human Resources.

Abides by the organizations compliance program and requireme! nts.

Performs employee evaluations on or before the due date.

Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Current on all assigned training for current year. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Excellent communication skills able to deal sensitively with clients' needs.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a medical practice setting.

Normal Retail Pharmaceutical environment.

Involves frequent contact with staff, patients and the public. Work may be stressful at times. Contact may involve dealing with people who are angry or upset.
FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS

Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting boxes, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

Must be able to perform occasional rep! etitive hand motion.

Requires standing and walking for prolong! ed periods of time.

Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 30 pounds.

Vision must be correctable to 20/20 and hearing must be in normal range for telephone contacts.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited program for Pharmacists.

Licensed to practice pharmacy in Maine.

Will have up-to-date training and certification in Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support issued by American Heart Association, American Red Cross or American Health & Safety Institute. Must obtain within 3 months if not current at hire.
