The pharmacist position in the Specialty Pharmacy is the key clinical role of the pharmacy, responsible for the correct dispensing of medication and literature as well as counseling and information for patients and providers. There is an inherent leadership and supervisory role for technicians and non-clinical employees. Pharmacists are expected to be competent in the patient management, fulfillment, and clinical areas.

Clinical review of prescription orders for basic appropriateness of therapy or plan specific criteria review (Prior Authorization) Verification of all patient orders for completeness and accuracy before being sent to fulfillment (Prospective DUR including allergies, interactions, contraindications, etc.) Data entry verification of all prescriptions entered into the pharmacy system by pharmacy technicians Counseling patients according to OBRA 90 standards on new medications and answering patient questions about medications; both phone in and walk-in patients Taking physician calls for new Rx's or questions about our services or medications that we dispense Effectively utilize clinical tools Assisting non-clinical employees by answering questions related to medication therapies to better assist patients Triaging work flow in and between all areas, along with and if necessary in the absence of management Transferring prescriptions in and out and to other pharmacies as appropriate Quality Assurance verification of final medications, information, and supplies, ensuring accuracy of patient order contents Supervising and educating pharmacy technicians ensuring Continuous Quality Improvement Act as a Pharmacist In Charge, if necessary Fully participate in the pharmacist rotation as 'Back Up' pharmacist for the triage 'on-call' employee. If needed, act as the 'on-call' triage pharmacist, in the absence of the triage employee Maintain applicable pharmacist licensure(s) including necessary Continuing Education requirements, without lapse. Any lapse will exclude the pharmacist from practicing pharmacy. Any disciplinary action by a federal/state agency will need further review by the Director for a determination on continuing practice of pharmacy. Individual and/or Group projects as assigned
Self-educate and knowledgeable on specialty medications Knowledgeable in applicable state and federal pharmacy laws Strong written and verbal communication skills necessary to professionally and effectively communicate with patients and physicians and convey ideas with fellow employees Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, and Pharmacy Processing System Education and Experience
BS or PharmD in Pharmacy Pharmacist Licensure as required by Board of Pharmacy in state of practice in good standing Other state Pharmacist Licensure if necessary 2 years specialty, community, hospital, or long term care pharmacy experience preferred
